The uses of PET film

PET film is used in our modern world frequently and in many diverse applications. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film – or polyester film – is a thermoplastic polymer that is utilised for antimicrobial & insulation films, surface protection, hard-coats films & protective films, labelling & label face-stocks, packaging & printable films, security/tamper evident films and photovoltaic back-sheets.

Combined with their processing tolerance and mechanical properties make them the perfect substrate choice for processing (i.e. metallizing, vacuum coating, laminating, etc.).

Typically either bubble extruded or biaxially oriented, PET film is a thermoplastic polymer that is in many ways not only comparable but superior to varying other thermoplastic polymers with regards to dielectric constant, insulation breakdown & melting points.

PET film also has a high tear strength & tensile strength which is one of the main factors for usage as outlined above.

That’s the standard usage – what if we told you there are other uses for PET films that may surprise you quite a bit?…

ITO Coated PET Films

This is where PET film gets interesting… Applying indium tin oxide (ITO) coatings to transparent PET films maintains their transparency while rendering them conductive – which subsequently makes them suitable components for touch screens and LCD displays, Transparent heaters and smart windows, position sensors as well as EMI/RFI Shielding, Electrophoretic Displays and Electroluminescent (EL) Lamps.

So your standard PET film used widely in packaging suddenly becomes a very important component in the manufacture of touch screen devices and eco friendly smart glass… amazing!

ITO Coated PET Film Rolls

At Diamond Coatings, we are able to supply an extensive range of coated PET film rolls in continuous metres (currently available lengths include 2, 4, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75, and 100 metres) in a standard thickness of 175 microns and a maximum (standard) width of 600 mm.

Diamond Coatings can also provide films in sheets (max. size: 600 mm x 450 mm) or varying laser cut shapes.

For ease of fabrication/handling, we can also provide coated PET films with protective film on both sides.
