Reaching for the Stars: Our Contribution to the Solar Orbiter
We’re incredibly proud of our participation in the ESA Solar Orbiter mission. This ambitious project, designed to study the Sun in close proximity, presented unique challenges that required innovative coating solutions. The Solar Orbiter faced intense heat and radiation, demanding coatings that can maintain stability and performance under extreme conditions.
Our team rose to the challenge, providing a conductive Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coating for the spacecraft’s Stood-Off Radiator Assembly (STORA) panels. Although it’s obviously very hot facing the sun in this proximity, there were a number of components that were not sun facing, that required the coating we supplied. Our coating ensured the panels remained conductive even at extremely low temperatures (-120°C), preventing electrostatic discharge that could have jeopardised the mission’s success.
