Optically Clear Polyester Film
Polyester film (polyethylene terephthalate – PET) is a high performing optically clear thermoplastic and is used frequently in a variety of applications and industries, including retail and technology – more of that in a bit…
Why is optically clear polyester film so popular?
To start with, it’s extremely durable with a high tensile strength and anti-abrasive qualities, meaning it is well suited for the most demanding of environments and usage applications. It also has a low moisture absorption and high UV resistance, which makes it ideal for use outside.
Polyester film is also relatively cheap compared to alternatives and is easily manipulated making it an ideal clear film.
At Diamond Coatings we produce ITO coated optically clear polyester film which opens up so many possibilities.
What is ITO coated optically clear polyester film?
ITO stands for Indium Tin Oxide. ITO can be coated onto various substrates, including glass, plastics and PET films. This coating is totally transparent and is also conductive, meaning a polyester film can now carry a voltage.
A totally clear film that conducts electricity? Like we said, so many possibilities…
ITO coated PET film applications
One of the most common applications is within touchscreens. These can range from your smartphone and tablet and extend further to retail and public use, such as restaurant touchscreen ordering systems and even some ATM’s. There is a good chance that where there is a touchscreen, there is probably an ITO coating in play.
Smart windows which offer light shielding when energised is another good example of these ITO coated films in use. The additional UV resistance of a PET film is also a useful aspect in this application.
ITO coated polyester film is also utilised for photovoltaic back-sheets, electroluminescent lamps, medical sensors, electrophoretic displays and EMI/RFI shielding.
Diamond Coatings ITO coated optically clear polyester film
Diamond Coatings’ ITO polyester film is available with a standard 175-micron thickness in sheets (600 mm x 457 mm standard sheet size), rolls (maximum width: 600 mm; lengths up to 100 m) and laser cut shapes. Standard sheet resistances include 50 and 100 ohms/sq.
Diamond Coatings ITO polyester film is available with protective films on both surfaces to assist in handling and fabrication.
