The Advantages of Specialist Conductive Tapes

We are frequently asked just what are the advantages of using specialist conductive tapes in comparison to other secondary grounding and EMI shielding solutions. The following paragraphs should explain why these tapes may be selected over other options.

We are frequently asked just what are the advantages of using specialist conductive tapes in comparison to other secondary grounding and EMI shielding solutions. The following paragraphs should explain why these tapes may be selected over other options.

Range of Applications

Conductive tapes are suitable for a wide range of applications including, for example:

• PDAs
• PDPs
• LCD monitors
• Portable PCs
• Duplicating machines
• Mobile phones
• Other electronic equipment requiring EMI shielding

Conductive tapes are used to seal any gaps on enclosures that are RFI sensitive, specialist conductive tapes are often used to conductively connect/ground coated (ITO) windows into their respective apertures. Such tapes are also widely used to established an electrical connection onto a busbar via either conductive bonding / clamping or soldering to the copper tape for ITO coated heater window and Shielded Window application.

Range of Sizes

Different applications can obviously also differ significantly in size. We therefore not only supply both our conductive aluminium tapes and conductive copper tapes in widths of 25, 12 and 6 mm, but can also provide non-standard widths upon request. In addition, the adhesive can be applied either single or double-sided. All rolls come in lengths of 20 metres.

Ease of Use

Specialist conductive tapes are exceptionally easy to use. All you have to do is to:

• Make sure the surface of the application is kept dry and clear
• Ensure correct adhesion, as the excellent adhesion of these products can make removal and re-application difficult and could result in the products’ resistance being lower than stated.

It is also necessary to avoid placing tapes under great tension following bonding to make sure full strength can be achieved.
All of our Conductive Tapes come with conductive PSA and a release liner for ease of application.

Advantages

In addition to being suitable for a broad range of applications; available in a variety of sizes and easy to use, specialist conductive tapes also eliminate the need for screws, fasteners and other secondary grounding solutions altogether and offer:

• Increased design flexibility
• Enhanced ESD protection
• Reduced cross talk
• Improved antenna performance

Highly cost-effective, these conductive tapes are a particularly efficient material when used in EMI shielding in terms of lower contact resistance; decreased error rates in high frequency data transmission and improved signal-to-noise ratios in high-frequency data transmission.
